Course Aims
The aim of this course is to introduce students to journalism and to provide them with a working knowledge of the media industry in Ireland.
Duration
Higher National Diploma in Media (Journalism) BTEC - Two Years.
Entry Requirements
Students applying for this course should have passed the Leaving Certificate in five subjects including English and have achieved at least 1 C3 Grade in Higher Level papers. Applicants will be interviewed. Mature applicants welcome.
Students applying directly from FETAC Certificate courses require a minimum of 205 points generated from 8 relevant full-value modules. Points are awarded as follows:
Level 5 Modules:
Pass = 20 points
Merit = 35 points
Distinction = 50 points
All applicants whose first language is not English will be tested at entry.
All applicants will be interviewed.

Work Experience
Work experience is an essential part of all our programmes. The College assists students in finding suitable work placements and monitors and assesses their performance in the work place.
NUJ
Students studying on this two year programme can apply for temporary membership of the National Union of Journalists.

Year 2 - BTEC - Higher National in Media (Journalism)
Career Opportunities
Students may use this as a foundation course for entry into further studies in the areas of Radio Journalism Communications or Journalism. Students successfully completing the BETC HND may be eligible for exemptions on degree courses in UK colleges. Contact the college for further information. Those with the necessary skills and aptitudes may seek employment in the area of journalism, communications and media.

Students may progress to relevant Degree courses
both here and in the U.K. Graduates from this
course can enter Year 2 of the Griffith College Honours Degree in Journalism (Level 8) and may qualify (with merit/distinction profile) for the one year Media Production Management Honours Degree Programme (Level 8) in Ballyfermot College. Other graduates have progressed, with exemptions, to Dublin Institute of Technology, Wolverhamption University and London Metropolitan College. Within Rathmines College graduates have progressed to the Diploma in Public Relations (PRII). |
