The book launch took place on **Tuesday, February 10th**, at the iconic **Hodges Figgis** on Dawson Street—a fitting setting for a work that bridges the gap between meticulous historical research and the high-stakes drama of the 18th century.
The Man Behind the Legend
For those who may not be familiar with the name, Sir Charles Wogan was a Kildare-born “Wild Goose” whose life reads like an adventure novel. A military officer, diplomat, and poet, Wogan is perhaps most famous for masterminding the 1719 rescue of Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska (the betrothed of James III) from her confinement in Innsbruck.
Richard’s biography is the result of ten years of research, drawing on Wogan’s own words and extensive correspondence housed in the Stuart Papers at Kew. The book follows Wogan’s journey from the plains of Kildare to the cells of Newgate Gaol, through the courts of Europe, and into the highest circles of the Papacy, where he was named a Senator of Rome.
A Night of Celebration
The launch event at Hodges Figgis was a wonderful gathering of colleagues, history enthusiasts, and students. The evening featured:
An Author Talk:** Richard shared insights into the ten-year journey of tracking Wogan’s “intrepid life” across seven European Great Powers.
Official Launch:** The book was officially introduced by **Mr. Liam Maloney**, who spoke on the significance of Wogan’s legacy in Irish and European history.
Book Signing:** Attendees had the chance to get their copies signed and discuss the “international intrigue and secret Masonic orders” that fill the book’s pages.
