Pre-University News and Media

Graduates from our media courses have progressed on to Higher Education achieving both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Graduates have also gained employment in all areas of the creative media industry as news reporters, feature writers, radio presenters, radio producers, news editors, content creators, podcast producers, sports journalists, radio presenters, public relations practitioners, newspaper editors, advertising copywriters and other exciting media careers.

Pre-University News and Media

The course teaches students the fundamental skills of a journalist in the 21st century. It incorporates both practical methods of working across various media and the theoretical underpinnings of journalism that are as relevant today as they ever were. The course reflects the advancement of digital technology and publication of news on multiple platforms and gives students the tools to report the news and engage the public in a constantly evolving media and news environment. The course is designed for students who specifically want to progress onto a Level 6, Level 7 or Level 8 Media, Journalism or Communications course. Media graduates will have the appropriate level of academic writing and research methodologies to successfully complete a Level 8 degree.

  • Applicants should have Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent
  • Mature Applicants welcome.
  • All applicants whose first language is not English will be tested at entry
  • Use of a computer / laptop and Wi-Fi is desirabel

Education Progression

QQI Level 5 Award holders are eligible to progress onto Rathmines College’s Level 6 Advanced Certificate in News and Media in the Digital Age or apply to a wide variety of Higher Education colleges see www.cao.ie  and www.qqi.ie.  Graduates meeting the specified criteria (Distinctions in 5 nominated modules) may apply for progress to DCU, TU Dublin and IADT Degree Programmes in Communications and Journalism.

Work experience is an essential part of all our programmes. The College assists students in finding suitable work placements and monitors and assesses their performance in the work place.
