Course Information

The course teaches students the fundamental skills of a journalist in the 21st century. It incorporates both practical methods of working across various media and the theoretical underpinnings of journalism that are as relevant today as they ever were. The course reflects the advancement of digital technology and publication of news on multiple platforms and gives students the tools to report the news and engage the public in a constantly evolving media and news environment. The course is designed for students who specifically want to progress onto a L6, L7 or L8 Media, Journalism or Communications course. Media graduates will have the appropriate level of academic writing and research methodologies to successfully complete a L8 degree. 

Please note: some courses may involve remote teaching next year depending on Covid and the instruction from the HSE.

Course Requirements

Students applying for this course should have passed the Leaving Certificate in five subjects including English.
Mature Applicants welcome.
All applicants whose first language is not English will be tested at entry.
All applicants will be interviewed.

Work experience is an essential part of all our programmes. The College assists students in finding suitable work placements and monitors and assesses their performance in the work place.

Further Education Links

QQI Level 5 Award holders are eligible to progress onto Rathmines College's Level 6 Advanced Certificate in News and Media in the Digital Age or apply to a wide variety of Higher Education colleges see www.cao.ie  and www.qqi.ie.  Graduates meeting the specified criteria (Distinctions in 5 nominated modules) may apply for progress to Dublin City University Degree Programmes in Communications and Journalism.
