This Level 6 course enables students to progress and develop their programming skills in C++, Java and Visual Studio.  

Students from this course who achieve the required grades are eligible for advanced entry to the second year of Level 8 Computer Science courses in select colleges including:

Education Progression

Graduates of the Advanced Certificate in Software Development are eligible to fast-track their degree at the National College of Ireland (NCI). We offer Advanced Entry into Year 2 for specific programmes, allowing you to build directly on your previous studies.

BSc (Hons) in Computing
Graduates holding the full Level 6 QQI Award in Software Development (6M0691) can apply for direct entry into the second year of this programme.
Requirement: Must hold the full QQI Level 6 award.
Minimum Grade: Overall PASS grade or higher.

BSc (Hons) in Data Science
Holders of the Level 6 QQI Award in Software Development (6M0691) are also eligible to apply for Year 2 entry, provided they meet the specific mathematics requirements essential for data analytics.
Requirement: Must hold the full QQI Level 6 award.
Minimum Grade: Overall PASS grade or higher.
Maths Requirement: You must meet one of the following criteria: QQI Level 5 or 6: A Pass grade in Maths modules 6N3395, 5N0556, or 5N18396.
Leaving Certificate: A minimum grade of O4 or H7 in Mathematics.

Successful Level 6 graduates with the Advanced Certificate in Software Development can also apply for advanced entry to the second year of Level 8 Computer science courses in select colleges including:

  • TUD Tallaght  
  • TUD Blanchardstown  
  • Griffith College.  

Career Opportunities

The IT sector is booming with a major shortage of Computer Science graduates. This course is a stepping stone to a qualification leading to solid  employment in Ireland and Abroad.  Most successful Level 6 graduates with the Advanced Certificate in Software Development will progress to Level 8 degree programmes. Others seek employment and pursue their degree studies on a part-time basis.
